At I/O 2018 event, Google rollout first public beta of Android P. Google has released a bunch of new feature to an upcoming Android P. The feature includes a gesture interface, optimizations of battery, and a simplified dashboard which gives you an overview of the time you’ve spent on your device.
The first Android P beta is now available to download on all Pixel devices. Along with Pixel device, some selected flagship devices can also download the first beta version of Android P which includes Nokia, OnePlus, Sony, Essential and more. Moreover, the stable version of Android P will roll out in late summer. Here’s everything you need to know about the latest Android P.
What’s new in Android P?
1. Adaptive Battery life:
Android P is designed to offer better battery experience using an on-device machine learning. The new Android P figures out which app you will use in next few hours and which you won’t. Google said that this feature of Android P will cut down CPU usage up to 30 percent when waking up apps.
2. Android Dashboard:
The new Android P dashboard gives you an overview of time that you’ve spent on your phone, number of times you unlocked your smartphone, number of received notification and per-app usage. With App Timer, you can set the app usage limit for each app. Then you will get a reminder when you’re close to your usage time or once you exceed the limit.
Android P also announced granular control for Do Not Disturb Mode. Now your phone will automatically switch to DND mode when you place your phone screen to surface. However, DND will mute all notification but Android P allow you to set as Starred Contacts. So your Android device will send all notification from that starred contacts. Also, the Wind Down feature of Android P will turn the screen to greyscale according to your chosen time.
3. App Action and Slices:
App Action is a new prediction tool which is available in your app drawer. It will predict “next action you want to take” on your phone. App Action will be available in the launcher, the search app, Google Assistant. The tools aim is to deliver suggestion based on your usage habits. For example, if you’ve plugged in with headphones then you will see an action to play music.
Slices are designed to see how you interact with pre-installed apps. With Slices, you can do your task in a quicker way. For example, if you’re looking to book a ride, then you can simply search for Lyft within Google search or say I want to book a ride on your Google Assistant. Now slices will show all the interactive links which is already populated with direction to your home or work address.
4. Adaptive Brightness:
Google noted that auto-brightness setting is not enough for your phone. Now with new Adaptive brightness feature in Android P, will make your phone more power efficient. Based on your environment and learned behavior, your phone screen brightness will calibrate.
5. New System Navigation:
Google is adding a new gesture which completely replaces the entire old icons. Also, you can now do a short swipe up for using multitasking on your phone. Now swipe up from the bottom to see recent open apps, and a couple of suggested apps. Android P will let you scroll through all of your apps by sliding right or left with the horizontal bar at the bottom. Also, a longer swipe will move towards app drawer.
