Android P First Developer Preview Released By Google

From a couple of months, we have here many news about Android P operating system. Now, Google has finally launched the first Developer Preview of Android P. However there is no official name for Android P but the developer can download this unnamed update which will allow them to begin preparing their apps for the update which will arrive later this year.

“Android P offers support for the latest edge-to-edge screens with display cutout for camera and speaker. The new Display Cutout class lets you find out the location and shape of the non-functional areas where content shouldn’t be displayed,” Google explains on the Android Developer blog.

Google has also revealed some new features which will come along with Android P operating system. The company is sharing its beta version of Android P which means it is not built for normal users. On its website, Google has provided Android P developer preview using Pixel phones. If you are a developer then only you can download and check the preview of new Android P operating System.

The company explained that users can use two or more physical cameras on devices which are running an Android P operating system. Also, the API in Android P will allow you to automatically switch between two or more cameras. The Android P comes with many new features. So let’s take a quick look at some of this features.

Display cutout support:

Google is launching a display cutout support on Android P operating system. Now the apps can take advantage of fullscreen content on your latest Android devices. This feature comes along with API which will check the cutout and also you can manage your content layout which is to be displayed. Basically, you can keep a fullscreen layout around the notch or keep your content separate from status bar and notch.

Multi-camera API:

With Multi-Camera API, you can access two or more cameras on devices which are running Android P operating system. With dual-front or dual-back cameras, it will help you create an innovative feature which is not possible with just a single camera. Also, the API in Android P will help you to automatically switch between two or more cameras.

Better Messaging Notifications:

Android P will come with improving visibility and function in notifications section. The new message notification will highlights who is messaging and how you can reply. Along with highlight of a message, it will also show conversations, attach photos and stickers, and even suggest smart replies.

Open Mobile API for NFC Payments:

The app can use API to access secure elements which enables your smart-card payments and other secure services. The Android P adds an implementation of new GlobalPlatform which is an Open Mobile API for Android. Hardware abstraction layer on Android P will provide API with a variety of Secure Elements which include ESE, UICC, and others.

Indoor Positioning:

This feature will allow apps to measure their distance from an access point and calculate the indoor position up to one or two meters. Also, getting an accurate indoor positioning has been a long-standing challenge which will give opportunities for new location-based services. The new Android P adds support for the IEEE 802.11mc WiFi protocol which is also known as WiFi Round-Trip-Time (RTT).

ImageDecoder:

Android P provides you an easier way to decode images to bitmaps or drawables. With ImageDecoder you can create a bitmap or drawable from a byte buffer, file, or URI. Offers much more advantages over BitmapFactory which include support for exact scaling, single-step decoding to hardware memory, support for post-processing in decode, and decoding of animated images.

Also, it is going to improve its privacy protection. The operating system will not allow the app to access the device’s microphone, sensors, and camera. This system can only be accessible to the apps when they are working in the background with a live notification in the notification shade.

As mention above, developers with Pixel devices can only download and check the P developer preview.
