WhatsApp is coming out with big updates in a very short period of time. WhatsApp had been testing this feature with 1 Million users in the Indian market for a long period of time but was just waiting for the approval from National Payments Corporation of India (NCPI) to finally roll out to all the users in India. Now that NCPI has given a green signal to WhatsApp to integrated Unified Payments Interface (UPI), it is going to be really simple for users to send money from the application.

This could be a big competition for Google Pay and PhonePe as at has captured 80% of the UPI transactions in India. WhatsApp has been using the service in the beta mode since February 2018 with its current registered user database of 1 Million users. This move from NCPI comes after its UPI platform reached 2 Billion transactions in a month. UPI processed 2.07 billion transactions in October 2020 which is worth Rs. 3.86 lakh crore.

The application will be using a multi-bank model where one of the payment service providers is ICICI Bank, this comes from an organisation that operates UPI.

A video posted by Chief Executive of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg said, “With UPI, India has created something truly special and is opening up a world of opportunities for micro and small businesses that are the backbone of the Indian economy. India is the first country to do anything like this. I’m glad we were able to support this effort and work together to help achieve a more digital India. I want to thank all our partners who’ve made this possible. When people can access financial tools, they’re more empowered to support themselves and others, or start a business. Long term, we need more innovation that gives people control over their money, and making payments easier is a small step that can really help,”
